How to Clear ChatGPT History: Delete, Archive, or Keep Chats

Choose the right way to clear your history

• Delete one chat when you no longer need that conversation. It disappears from your account view immediately, and the action cannot be undone.
• Delete selected conversations individually when you want to keep some history. Find each chat, open its more options menu, and review the deletion before confirming. ¹
• Archive one or more chats when you want a cleaner sidebar without deleting the conversations. Archived chats remain in your account and can remain searchable.

How to delete one ChatGPT conversation on the web

1. Sign in to the ChatGPT account and workspace that contain the conversation.
2. Open your chat history in the sidebar. If the conversation is not visible, use ChatGPT Search or check Settings > Data controls > Archived chats; it may be archived rather than deleted. ¹
3. Open the conversation’s more options menu (•••), select Delete, and confirm the deletion.
4. Treat the confirmation as final. The chat should disappear from the account view immediately, but permanent deletion from OpenAI systems follows the retention process described above. ¹

Deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a file saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library. If the conversation contains a file you also want removed, check Library and delete that saved copy separately. ^{1 2}

Archive versus delete: what changes?

Archive is a visibility and organization choice, not a deletion method. An archived chat leaves the regular sidebar, but it remains saved under the same retention rules as other regular chats and can remain searchable. To manage it, open Settings > Data controls > Archived chats (the label can appear as View archived chats or include a Manage action), then choose Unarchive or Delete. ^{1 2}

How to clear selected chats or all chats

For a targeted cleanup, search for and review the conversations you want to remove, then use each conversation’s menu to delete or archive it. Confirm only the chats you intend to remove. If you have many loaded conversations to review together on desktop, the optional ChatSweep workflow above adds batch selection without claiming to fetch your entire history.

1. For the native full-history option, open Settings.
2. Choose Data controls.
3. Select Delete all chats, read the confirmation, and continue only after checking that you have exported anything important. ChatGPT says this action cannot be undone and can affect chats in the current account or workspace, including project chats. ¹
4. For a less destructive reset, choose Archive all chats in the same area. Archived chats are still retained, so use Delete when removal—not just sidebar cleanup—is your goal. ¹

Clearing ChatGPT history on iPhone or Android

On mobile, the current official Data controls path is: open the sidebar, tap your profile icon to open Settings, then choose Data controls. OpenAI documents this path for the model-improvement setting and says the available controls depend on your account, plan, platform, and workspace. For chat deletion or archiving, use the delete/archive action shown for the conversation or the Archived chats controls in Settings > Data controls; labels can differ by device. ^{1 3}

History, saved memory, training, and Temporary Chat are different

Saved chat history is the conversation list. Saved memories are stored separately. Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate memory created from it; to remove remembered information, delete the saved memory in Settings > Personalization > Memory and delete the source chat and other copies where the information appears. Turning off Memory also does not delete past chats. ⁴

Turning off Improve the model for everyone changes whether new conversations are used to train OpenAI models; it does not delete or hide saved chats. Regular chats remain in history and archived chats remain archived. Use Delete or account deletion separately when your goal is removal. ³

Temporary Chat is a prevention tool for a new conversation, not a way to erase old history. To start one, open a new chat, select Temporary, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending the first message, and then write your prompt. While temporary, it does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Saving it converts it into a regular chat. ^{3 5}

Export your ChatGPT data before deleting

If you might need a conversation later, request an export before deleting it. For an eligible signed-in personal account, open the profile menu, select Settings > Data controls, choose Export under Export data, and confirm. OpenAI sends an email or SMS when the export is ready; the download link expires after 24 hours, and the export ZIP can include chat history and other account data. ⁶

Before you confirm deletion

• Check that you are signed in to the correct account and workspace.
• Search for important chats and inspect Archived chats before assuming they are missing.
• Export conversations you may need, and verify the export before deleting.
• Check Library separately if uploaded or generated files also need removal.
• Remember that organization retention, security, legal, project, and connected-app rules can affect what is retained. ^{1 2}
