How to Delete All Chats in ChatGPT

Before you delete everything

If any conversation may matter later, request an export before deleting. On an eligible signed-in account, use Settings > Data controls > Export data > Confirm export. OpenAI says the export can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after delivery. Check the ZIP before deleting; an export cannot restore chats that were already deleted. Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu accounts can request exports from settings, while Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces need their workspace owner. ²

An export is a copy for review and safekeeping, not a guarantee that ChatGPT can import your old conversations back into the same history. Keep the downloaded file secure because it may contain sensitive account data.

How to delete all chats in ChatGPT on the web

1. Sign in to the ChatGPT account and workspace whose conversations you want to remove.
2. Open your account menu, then select Settings.
3. Select Data controls.
4. Choose Delete all chats.
5. Read the confirmation message carefully, then continue only if you accept permanent deletion.

OpenAI documents the bulk control as applying to chats in your current account or workspace, including chats in projects. It also states that the Delete all chats action cannot be undone. The exact labels can vary with the account or workspace experience, so follow the confirmation dialog shown in your own ChatGPT session rather than a third-party script. ¹

OpenAI schedules deleted chats for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. That timing has exceptions: data may already be de-identified and disassociated from your account, or OpenAI may need to retain it longer for security or legal obligations. Therefore, “deleted from my history” and “every copy instantly erased everywhere” are not the same claim. ¹

What Delete all chats does not mean

Archived chats are not a hidden backup. Archiving only removes a conversation from the regular sidebar; archived chats remain in the account and can be searched. A delete-all action is different from Archive all chats. ¹

• It does not delete your OpenAI account. Account deletion is a separate, permanent process with separate subscription and access consequences. ⁸
• It does not automatically erase saved memories. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately, so review Settings > Personalization > Memory if you also need to remove them. ⁶
• It does not turn off model training controls. Turning off Improve the model for everyone stops eligible new conversations from being used to improve models, but it does not delete or hide saved chats. ⁷
• It does not necessarily delete files saved separately in Library. OpenAI says you must select and delete those files in Library; deleting a chat containing a file does not delete its Library copy. ^{3 5}

Project chats are an important boundary. OpenAI’s current deletion help says bulk actions can affect chats in projects, but project files and Library files follow their own storage rules. Deleting a project removes its chats, instructions, and files stored only in that project; files saved separately in Library are not deleted by deleting the project. ^{1 4}

Mobile apps and a history that still appears

For iOS or Android, use OpenAI’s current Data controls in ChatGPT guide for the app-specific controls available to your account. This article does not guess at mobile menu labels that may differ by release.

If history still appears after you confirmed deletion, do not keep clicking delete or run a browser-console script. First confirm that you used the same email, sign-in method, and workspace; use chat search and check Archived chats; refresh ChatGPT or sign out and back in; then check OpenAI Status for an active incident. OpenAI lists these checks for missing conversations, and notes that deleted chats, including chats removed with Delete all chats, cannot be restored. ¹

Want to keep some chats? Use selective cleanup instead
